The history of Wearside First

The idea of a citywide credit union was developed initially back in 1999 by a community group in the Coalfields area.

After a huge amount of research a feasibility study was commissioned and carried out by Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL) which found that there was a need for a citywide credit union which would be available for anyone who lived or worked within Wearside.

Funding to the tune of £660k was raised from ERDF, HLC, NRF,SRB and NDC to support the development and initial trading of the credit union. A further £95k has kindly been granted by Northern Rock Foundation.

Application was made to the Financial Services Authority for the registration and authorisation of the credit union and this was granted in August 2003.

The credit union opened for business and started taking on members in November 2003.

Whilst we are currently in temporary premises we will be opening city centre 'shop front' premises in Waterloo Place in March 2004 and collection points will be opening throughout the city commencing January 2004.

We plan to be one of the largest credit unions in England.
