  • ADDITIONAL FUNDING OBTAINED FROM RECHAR FOR TWO WORKERS
  • A TRAINING PROGRAMME WAS DEVELOPED
  • PLANS AND VENUE FOR THE ACCESS POINT WAS DEVELOPED BY LOCAL PEOPLE-WORKING CLOSELY WITH COUNCILLORS AND OFFICERS. LATER WITH ARCHITECTS AND FINANCIAL ADVISORS.
  • STEERING GROUP TRAINED TO B.O.D.'s
  • ALL LEGAL PROCESSES WERE IDENTIFIED AND ADDRESSED
  • LOTTERY BID SUCCESSFULLY APPLIED FOR £185,000.
  • PROJECT LAUNCHED 13TH JUNE 2000

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

  • CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL PEOPLE TO MANAGE THEIR OWN PROVISION.
  • TO EMPOWER THE COMMUNITY.
  • BREAKDOWN BARRIERS TO ACCESS OF COST, TRANSPORT, CHILDCARE, CONFIDENCE, DISABIITY/ABILITY, CULTURE.
  • TO ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT LOCAL PEOPLE THROUGH TRAINING, EDUCATION-LEADING TO EMPLOYMENT.
  • TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE WHOLE COMMUNITY TO PARTICIPATE AND BENEFIT FROM THE COMMUNITY ACCESS POINT.
  • TO LISTEN AND RESPOND.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Chairman Robert Heron
Bob has been involved with the project since its conception in 1997. He has helped to support and encourage local people to participate in all aspects of the project. He has acted as Chairperson for the life of the project. He has been involved with the Cabinet and held the Portfolio for Regeneration. He attends meetings and offers his full continued support and advise to the project.
 
Treasurer
 
Secretary Maureen Fletcher
Maureen is a local person who currently holds the position of Secretary within the project. She first became involved as a volunteer and is now a member of the Board of Directors. She has participated in various courses and is currently completing Board of Directors training. She is actively involved on all aspects of the project.
Cllr. Elizabeth Bell
Elizabeth is a new member to the Board of Directors. She is currently participating in Board of Directors Training, has a wealth of experience to share with the project and is Chairperson of SureStart and the Domestic Violence Forum.
Walter Slassor
Walter is also retired and carries out a similar role to George. He has a vast amount of life experience to share with the project and participates in training and conferences.
George Tipton
George is retired and acts as an active volunteer lending his hand to maintenance tasks within the project. He has attended Board of Director Training and has represented the project at partnership meetings and conferences.
Kath Tipton
Kath became involved with the project first as a participant in training and has progressed through various training courses to become a qualified tutor in crafts. She now teaches at our sister project at Easington Lane Community Access Point and runs a voluntary craft session at the Houghton Racecourse Community Access Point.
 
Cllr. Juliana Heron
Juliana is a local elected member and is currently the Mayor of Sunderland for 2003-2004. She attends meetings as a local person and shares her wealth of experience with the Board of Directors and is a keen supporter and activist of Regeneration in the Coalfield area.
